The diversification of mobility solution architectures.
Autonomous driving is changing fundamentally mobility solution architectures. When mobility is changing, mobility design also needs to change. "Mobility as a service" describes solutions where the user is accessing the product value through a service rather just about owning the product itself. Despite that it will be expanding the landscape of mobility solutions and diversify them it also changes focus from being about the raw hardware towards how the solution integrates into the users life. Furthermore designing for the passive experience will become more important and opens up a room for new innovations. Being focused and having a clear, specific and distinctive value-proporisition for the targeted use-case(s) will become increasingly important.
Mobility becomes human-centred.
People already experience autonomous transportation today. To learn about behaviour patterns and needs we can research on how people interact in these spaces that are already present today. This project is based on a usage case we all know: peoples curiosity to explore and discover the context they are moving trough. A similar experience exist today: city exploration services like the London Bus tours. The project aims to take these insights and explore how autonomous "mobility as a service" can advance this experience in the future.
A new space of opportunity.
With autonomous driving the vehicle interior becomes a platform for experience: like a workspace to be productive or a interactive room to participate in a yoga class.
Focusing on the human need of exploring and learning about the context.
Exploring on a basic human need while on the go: discovering the context and learning about it. This need and the social parameters attached to it are the base of the conception of the mobility service. Considering technology developments Augmented Reality & Artificial Intelligence can play a role in enhancing this experience.

Learn what Xplore is all about. A long story told short.
The base of the project were user insights and problems which later got catalyse towards a brand specific solution. This system concentrates on empowering people in having new mobility experiences that are curated and prepared in advance. Furthermore BMW Xplore focuses on new seamless ways in personalizing the vehicle set-up as well as how this could support people in daily scenarios. In order to remember or even contextually create experiences the mobility service connects users to new empowering tools that unite both physical and digital design. This enables the user in having curated augmented reality experiences, traveling back in time or bookmarking things that were interesting on the way.

BMW Xplore helps you to break out and make a new cross on your map. Before that vehicle and experience personalisation play a big role. Planning, organising and arranging are a core problem why people hold back from breaking out.
Curated Experiences & Artificial Intelligence.
See what journeys and experiences are trending in your area. "Experiences" allow you to book complete curated experience that include everything you need for the journey: the destination activity tickets, equipment, the perfect route, perpetrating seat infotainment content and more. In a case of Level 4 or 5 automation the vehicle could pick up all passengers completely prepared. But what role can AI play? In Xplore it helps with mobility specific intelligence and takes part of the conversation. It represent the vehicle and creates a bound between the passengers and the product. It can help all trip members to arrange shared items or reply if the snowboarding equipment of Alex fits into the vehicle.
Personalised trip and interior experience through on-demand delivery.
Add "Upgrades" to your vehicle seat before the journey starts. These upgrades, which can be anything from renting a GoPro or mountain bike to curated sport packages, will be delivered to the selected vehicle for your journey by on-demand delivery and the network of BMW dealers. At the day of the journey your deliveries are placed and your seat customised. In a case of a Level 5 driving automatisation the vehicle could pick up all passengers completely prepared. A more easier way to implement such a experience would be adding stops on the route to puck up the "Upgrades".
The BMW Window of the Future.
A new framework for services that will allow to advance the experience of exploring and discovering the context.
The "Window of the Future" allows people to control the context they are traveling through and be also a platform for other brands to built experiences on.
Touch + Gesture
Prototyping the experience: A 4K screen that is showing a video of the side-window view and a interactive armrest that recognised gesture motion through a 3D magnetic room and working dials and buttons that let you interact with your travel context. Prototyped with the combination of Unity, Arduino and a 3D gesture pad.

Bridging physical and digital.
A central role of the Window is to document the journey and make people to focus more the context and less about digital documentation or creation. At the same time enabling people to do exactly that if they want without loosing focus while pulling out the phone.
An enabler to new virtual worlds.
Not aiming to replace to reality but to make it more meaningful to you: for example learning destination languages by image recognition or learn about the dinosaurs that use to live in the area.
